Inspiration

As 2026 marks 140 years of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, as well as the inclusion of the traditional Korean Hanji papermaking technique on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, creative duo Bernal & Semerciyan presents Korean Possessions, an exhibition organized in collaboration with Mignon Yu in Paris from October 20 to 24, 2026.
For the occasion, the duo invited designer Madeleine Oltra to explore the possibilities of Hanji paper and create a hand fan in collaboration with Duvelleroy.
The fan’s square shape, emblematic of both 19th-century fan-making and the Maison’s heritage, provides the perfect canvas for the intricate cutouts and collages of the 2022 Design Parade Toulon Grand Prix winner.

Know How

Madeleine Oltra created the collage using Hanji paper supplied by Mr. Ahn Chi-yong, a mulberry papermaker based in Goesan, South Korea, and recognized as a Living National Treasure. The strips of paper were assembled using tapioca starch paste.

The fan maker then pleated the precious collage into the Mouchoir’s signature square shape before carefully attaching it, stick by stick, to the ebony wood frame.

Materials

Korean Hanji mulberry paper.
Ebony wood sticks sourced from Central Africa and crafted by a master tabletier in Spain.
